Device-to-Cloud Architecture

connecting embedded products to reliable and scalable backend systems.

GLC supports organisations developing connected products that require dependable communication between field devices and backend systems. Our focus is the architecture linking embedded software, connectivity layers, and operational infrastructure so products can deliver data reliably and scale as deployments grow.

We contribute across the lifecycle of connected systems: defining new architectures, improving existing deployments, and maintaining operational platforms supporting fleets of devices.

How we support you

Device Connectivity & Messaging

We design communication architectures enabling embedded devices to securely transmit telemetry and operational data.

Protocols commonly include MQTT, CoAP, and HTTPS, with careful attention to reliability, retry behaviour, and operation under constrained or intermittent networks.

Edge & Gateway Systems -

For distributed systems, we design gateway architectures where devices communicate via technologies such as BLE or Wi‑Fi to intermediate hubs.

These hubs aggregate and forward data to backend infrastructure while providing buffering and resilience during connectivity loss.

Backend Services & Data Platforms

We implement backend ingestion services that receive, validate, and store device telemetry.

Services are typically built using technologies such as Go, Java, or Python, with data stored in databases designed for efficient ingestion and analysis.

Containerised Infrastructure

Backend services can be deployed using Docker-based container environments, improving portability, simplifying deployment, and enabling consistent operation across development and production systems.

Secure Device Operation—-

————————————————

We support architectures incorporating secure device identity, encrypted communication, and controlled data exchange.

Systems may also support remote device monitoring and infrastructure capable of handling firmware updates for deployed devices.

How we work

Our approach starts with the realities of embedded systems: constrained hardware, intermittent connectivity, and long product lifecycles. Architectures are designed to remain simple, resilient, and maintainable as deployments scale.

We work closely with firmware, systems, and infrastructure teams so that devices, connectivity layers, and backend services operate as a coherent platform.

Typical applications

Industrial monitoring systems using cellular IoT connectivity

Connected IoT products transmitting telemetry from embedded devices to backend platforms

Secure device telemetry ingestion and backend data processing systems

  • “GLC worked with us for just over 4 months to help us integrate support for some BLE devices into our embedded health platform. The team quickly got up to speed with our kit and created solid FW to add the functionality we needed. They were extremely professional in all their dealings with us while still being very approachable at all times. GLC is extremely knowledgeable and resourceful and we were able to leave them to work on their tasks mostly in isolation. We were very happy with the work they did for us and would welcome the opportunity to work with them again.”
